Break the Fast, November 15th, 2003

A third Breaking the Fast event was held at Senshin Buddhist Temple on November 15th, 2003. The event was presented by the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Great Leap and Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress. There was a special performance by Great Leap including a choral poem based on stories from the Muslim American, Mexican American and Japanese American experiences. The performers from Great Leap included Nobuko Miyamoto and Ruben Guevara. Other performers were Victoria Bernal, Nona Chiang, Nader Elmakawi, Mari Hashimoto, Tomomi Kanemaru, Vincent Kobelt, Jo Anna Mixpe Ley, Hiroshi Murakawa, Joseph Pimentel, Ariel Robello and Najeeba Syeed-Miller.

An introduction to Buddhism was given by Reverend Masao Kodani of the Senshin Buddhist Temple and an introduction to Islam and question and answer session was presented by Salam Al-Mayarati of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

After a multi ethnic dinner enjoyed by 200 participants, there was a 9/11 Bell Piece by Kevin Higa and friends. Following an explanation of the Patriot Act and its consequences by Sireen Sawaf, of Muslim Public Affairs Council, there was a lighting of Candles of Remembrance and a Friendship Dance in the Temple courtyard.
